I broke the database. Well, actually it crashed itself, and I only made matters worse. Here comes the punch line: I restored the user table from a February backup...from two-thousand-six. Let's put a list of problems below. Thanks.

I just found the biggest problem. 23 accounts are unaccounted for and I don't have usernames for them. If this describes your situation, go find a post of yours, jot down the UNACCOUNTED## username, then recreate your old user account normally, and finally post here something like "UNACCOUNTED05 is blackwidow". Now here's a fun idea, you could all snatch up these unfortunate account names and pretend to be that person, thus tricking me and the whole world. Or you could resist the urge and post the rest of the problems you might find here.

Weird, any idea how it crashed? At least all the posts are fine. _________________ "If you knew how good I am you would think I'm modest." http://www.eliteownage.com/nice
But, when shit DOES happen: I use something called 'rsnapshot' for my backups at home. It's pretty straight forward, really easy to set up, and easy to get backups from. There's also rdiffbackup, which is what I use at my job for the QA machines. rdiffbackup is harder to set up, but it pays off in the long run, as backups take up less space (they're diffs instead of copies).
I have pretty thorough experience with both, so I'd be more than happy to help you set up either one. _________________ Sweet, I can have 1337 posts again!

sir Funk, that sounds like a better idea than my current tricentennial backups. I suppose I could script something for my home PC to auto download available backups, too. The frustrating part is that I know there's something wrong with the hardware, but the hosting company denies it and I can't get access to the box without some covert ops mission into their New York datacenter. I'd appreciate your help. the root login is... if you point me to a couple downloads and configuration manuals I should be able to compile and install. it's probably the setup that's the most pain, eh?
Naw, the setup isn't that bad for rsnapshot. It's actually designed around rsync, so you can backup off site VERY easily. You can have it do a sql dump before it backs stuff up too.
Check me out. The default conf file is pretty well commented, and it has examples of most of the stuff you'd want to do. To be honest, I barely read the howto, and just went by the conf file. _________________ Sweet, I can have 1337 posts again!

oh, and happy election night!
So far the only thing I can tell that is messed up is the accounts missing, and well, some of our posts, and most of our avatars are missing. Thats about it. Oh, and apparently I've lost my status as a Poison Chihuaha.
On a side note, I am in the process of hunting down those last few IPs for you Matt.

Yeah, avatars, locations, custom ranks, post counts, and the nub accounts. Nothing too bad since it seems that most of the posts are there, just mis-attributed to these UNACCOUNTEDxx people. When people figure out which UNACCOUNTEDxx person they are, will they automatically get back in the group that has mission control permissions or do we have to do that by hand? _________________ ~Mojo

Oh and one more thing. For a fee, would the hosting company possibly move you to different server just because you ask for it? If it's just the fee holding you back, I bet we could get together some donations since most of us have jobs 'n stuff like that now. _________________ ~Mojo

Custom ranks are fixed. The ranks themselves were still there, they were just all unassigned. _________________ ~Mojo

And maybe we could have god permissions (or whatever phpBB calls it) as admins so that we can do things like: add new admins (like me adding smart ben for instance), edit our own admin passwords, and purge the banner ads for sites that don't exist anymore/don't sponsor us anymore. _________________ ~Mojo
